The Edo State Government has strongly criticized the reinstated Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, accusing him of orchestrating attacks by thugs on innocent citizens and private property in Benin City.
A Federal High Court in Abuja recently nullified Shaibu’s impeachment and ordered the restoration of his position as Deputy Governor, directing the Inspector General of Police to reinstate his full security detail.
Despite an appeal and application for a Stay of Execution by the Edo State Government, Shaibu returned to Edo State on Thursday, leading to clashes between his supporters and those of Governor Godwin Obaseki.
In a statement to journalists, Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, warned that Shaibu would face legal consequences for the unrest in the state.
Nehikhare stated, “The Edo State Government has observed the extensive destruction caused by thugs and individuals working with former Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu under the guise of enforcing a court ruling reinstating him.”
“Shaibu and his supporters reportedly attacked innocent citizens and disrupted the activities of lawful businesses along the Airport Road in Benin City.”
“The state government strongly warns Shaibu against resorting to violence under the guise of enforcing a court decision. He is reminded that he is subject to the law and held accountable for the damages caused by him and his associates.”
“Shaibu’s history of violent behavior is well-documented, and he has previously been cautioned by respected members of society, including the esteemed Benin Monarch.”
“We emphasize that Shaibu will face the legal consequences for the violence he has incited, despite being aware of the pending Stay of Execution on the court’s ruling.”
“The public is urged to remain calm and continue their lawful activities, as the government remains committed to restoring and maintaining peace in the state amid unwarranted provocations.”
