The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the recent Edo State election, Asue Ighodalo, has urged the judiciary to uphold impartiality and hold accountable those responsible for electoral irregularities.
Ighodalo made this statement in his Independence Day message, which was released by the Team Asue Media Organisation (TAMO) and signed by Erhabor Emokpae in Benin City on Tuesday.
The PDP candidate also called on Nigerians to remain resilient despite the numerous challenges the nation has faced since gaining independence in 1960. He emphasized that the judiciary must remain steadfast and impartial as it addresses what he termed as the most blatant electoral malpractice in Nigeria’s democratic history since 1999.
He stated, “As we celebrate the 64th Independence Anniversary of our great nation, I stand before you with a heavy heart but unyielding resolve. This year’s celebration is marked by recent events that have left many disheartened.”
Referring to the recent governorship election, Ighodalo added, “The unprecedented electoral heist we witnessed is a stark reminder of the struggles our forefathers faced for the rights and freedoms we hold dear today.”
Ighodalo encouraged his supporters in Edo State and across the nation to remain steadfast, noting that the path to a prosperous Edo and a better Nigeria is still ongoing.
“Every challenge we encounter is merely a stepping stone toward the realization of our dreams for a fair, just, and equitable society,” he said, urging citizens not to lose hope.
He called for unity and resilience in the face of challenges, stating, “As we reflect on the sacrifices made for our independence, let us also renew our commitment to ensuring that our democracy flourishes.”
Ighodalo concluded with a message of optimism, saying, “Together, we shall forge a path toward a brighter future for Edo State and all of Nigeria. In unity and determination, we will rise.”
