In a startling twist at the Federal High Court in Lagos, the officials of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) left the courtroom without taking custody of the embattled suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, on Tuesday. The dramatic scene unfolded after a senior female operative from the Department of State Services (DSS) intervened, leaving both agencies entangled in a tense confrontation.
Justice Nicholas Oweibo had earlier granted bail to Emefiele, who was arraigned on charges of illegal firearms possession. However, chaos erupted when the DSS adamantly refused to permit the NCS officials to take the former CBN governor into their custody as directed by the court.
In an unexpected turn, a fierce altercation broke out between the officials of both agencies, resulting in a senior-ranking prisons official being seriously injured in the free-for-all.
As the situation escalated, a senior female DSS official rushed to the court and engaged in a brief discussion with the prison officials. The outcome was decisive, with the NCS officials ultimately vacating the court without Emefiele in their custody.
