Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, has expressed confidence that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, will soon regain his freedom.
Kalu revealed that he has visited Kanu multiple times at the Department of State Security (DSS) facility where he is held.
In a notable move, lawmakers, led by the representative of Ikwuano/Umuahia South and North Federal Constituency of Abia, recently penned an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
They invoked section 174 of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended) and section 107(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, appealing for Kanu’s release.
Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja through his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu commended his colleagues for rallying behind the call for Kanu’s freedom.
He anticipated that soon, the southeast caucus would unite in solidarity to support these efforts.
Kalu emphasized that Kanu’s release is pivotal to restoring peace in the region, noting progress in his private discussions with relevant authorities toward achieving a political resolution in Kanu’s case.
“I deeply appreciate my colleagues and fellow Nigerians who have stood in solidarity with the appeal for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release,” Kalu affirmed. He underscored the unity of purpose demonstrated and the shared objective of promoting national cohesion.
Assuring that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to peace and development in the Southeast, Kalu expressed confidence that a political solution to Kanu’s case is on the horizon, buoyed by the widespread support and appeals made so far.
“The voices of my parliamentary colleagues are truly inspiring, and I am grateful to them and all Nigerians who have lent their support,” Kalu concluded.
