OwelekeTV Politics — Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has addressed speculations surrounding his possible interest in contesting for the presidency, firmly stating that he has never engaged in discussions about running for any political office.
El-Rufai’s statement comes amid growing public interest following his recent engagements with notable figures in the opposition, including members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The meetings, particularly his interaction with former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, had fueled rumors that the former governor might be considering a political realignment or even positioning himself for a future presidential bid.
During a recent interview closely monitored by OwelekeTV, El-Rufai dismissed the claims, emphasizing that while he possesses the legal qualifications to contest for Nigeria’s highest office, he has not initiated any moves in that direction.
“Anyone from the age of 35 with a secondary school certificate is qualified to run for president, so in that sense, I am qualified,” El-Rufai explained. “But have I started talking to anybody about running for any office? No. I have never discussed that with anybody.”
His comments aimed to dispel speculations that his recent political engagements were part of a broader strategy to launch a presidential campaign.
He insisted that he remains committed to his political principles and is not considering a move to the PDP despite his interactions with members of the opposition party.
“PDP is not a party I would consider joining. I thought about it long ago and made my decision. Nothing has changed,”
he stated emphatically.
El-Rufai’s remarks are expected to put an end to ongoing debates regarding his political future, particularly as Nigerians continue to speculate about potential candidates for the next presidential election.
