OwelekeTV News – The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly taken Comrade Usman Okai Austin, a former member of the House of Representatives for the Dekina/Bassa federal constituency, into custody.
Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore disclosed that DSS operatives carried out the arrest at Okai’s residence on Wednesday in what he described as a covert operation.
According to Sowore, Okai’s arrest was linked to his outspoken criticism of Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo.
“Imagine how these lawless @OfficialDSSNG mercenaries are abducting, torturing, and dehumanizing a Nigerian citizen, @Austinokai, just because he expresses himself against illegitimate Gov. Ododo of Kogi State. #RevolutionNow #FreeAustinOkaiNow,”
Sowore wrote on X.
Condemning the action further, he added,
“Lawless @OfficialDSSNG at it again. They must release @Austinokai immediately, with no room for govt security agencies acting as mercenary for corrupt, unscrupulous and illegitimate political hacks such as Ododo, Yahaya Bello and co! #FreeAustinOkaiNow.”
Okai has been an outspoken critic of the Kogi State government, frequently challenging what he perceives as governance failures. Recently, he accused the state’s Accountant General, Habiba Onumoko, of exceeding her constitutional duties. He alleged financial mismanagement and claimed that a “cabal” had taken over the administration.
As of now, neither the DSS nor the Kogi State government has issued an official statement regarding Okai’s detention.
