The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has announced that the Borno State government has established several camps to shelter thousands of residents left stranded on the streets of Maiduguri due to severe flooding.
According to Daily Trust on Tuesday, NEMA’s North East Zonal Acting Coordinator, Surajo Garba, attributed the flooding to heavy rainfall and the collapse of Alao Dam. Garba urged residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately as the situation worsens.
“Thousands of people are stranded and trapped in water. We are collaborating with other stakeholders to organize rescue efforts,” Garba said.
The state government has opened displacement camps, including Bakassi Camp, Dalori Camp, the stadium, and various public schools located on higher ground, to accommodate those affected.
“The situation is saddening and pathetic. We hope conditions improve in the coming days,” Garba continued, adding that NEMA has submitted an emergency request for non-food items and other essential supplies to support those displaced by the floods.
Garba further revealed that over 50 locations, including Kalari, Budum, Millionaire’s Quarters, GRA, Allamin Dagash, Gwange, Bulabulin, and other areas, have been impacted by the disaster.
