The Federal Government has suspended the officers in charge of the Maximum and Minimum Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Lagos State, following allegations that Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, who was sentenced to six months in prison, was provided accommodation outside the custodial centre.
The decision was announced on Thursday by Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), in a statement released in Abuja.
Ahmed confirmed that the suspension of the officers was necessary to allow for an in-depth investigation into the allegations, with the findings to be made public once the probe is concluded.
“Following the viral audio circulating on social media regarding alleged misconduct by officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service concerning Mr. Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, the Board has suspended the following Senior Officers of the Service,” Ahmed stated.
The suspended officers include Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections (DCC) in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, and Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri.
Additionally, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna, stationed at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was suspended for allegedly escorting a convicted inmate out of the custodial centre to an external location.
In a separate case, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, was also suspended for allegedly receiving money on behalf of an inmate.
