President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently experiencing mild symptoms, confirmed the White House.
Despite being vaccinated and having received booster shots, the 81-year-old President received his positive test result on Wednesday, prompting the cancellation of a scheduled campaign speech.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that President Biden, after an active day in Las Vegas, plans to isolate at his Delaware home while continuing to fulfill his duties. Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden’s physician, reported symptoms such as a runny nose and cough, for which the President has begun treatment with Paxlovid, an antiviral medication for COVID-19.
The positive test comes amidst political pressures within Biden’s party regarding concerns over his age and its potential impact on his re-election candidacy. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Hakeem Jefferies have reportedly expressed these concerns in private meetings with the President.
President Biden expressed gratitude for well wishes on Twitter and affirmed his commitment to working during his recovery. He also addressed campaign-related issues, humorously remarking on social media about his determination amid the election challenges posed by wealthy figures like Elon Musk.
