Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns about the country edging towards a one-party dictatorship.
He called on leaders of opposition parties to unite and form a coalition to prevent this potential threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
In a statement on Monday, marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emphasized the sacrifices made by the nation’s founding fathers to maintain unity, urging the current generation to uphold those values.
Atiku congratulated Nigerians for sustaining the longest period of democratic rule in the nation’s history but warned that the democratic process is in danger of slipping into authoritarianism.
He stressed the need for opposition parties to offer a credible alternative, capable of preserving democratic integrity.
“Our political atmosphere has become corrosive, with opposition parties weakened, while the ruling party manipulates processes to stifle their effectiveness,” Atiku noted. He urged politicians of integrity to rise and reclaim Nigeria’s democracy.
