The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the recent scandal involving medical supply contracts awarded across 44 local governments in the state.
This appeal was made by the APC Kano State Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Abbas, who called for the suspension of the financial accounts of local government councils to prevent further exploitation under the guise of collaborative projects.
Abbas expressed astonishment at Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s admission of being unaware of the alleged corruption, suggesting it reflects his inability to govern effectively or maintain control over state affairs.
He also criticized the directive given to the state’s Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission to investigate the matter, deeming it inadequate.
Abbas raised concerns about the integrity of the commission’s chairman, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, accusing him of partisanship and lacking the authority to investigate a scandal allegedly involving close family members of the governor’s father-in-law and the leader of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the state, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso.
Abbas further highlighted a series of financial mismanagement allegations against NNPP officials, including controversial contracts worth N27 billion for constructing two interchange bridges in Kano metropolis, with costs shared between the state and the 44 local governments.
He pointed to other uninvestigated financial allegations, such as the misappropriation of palliatives by a political appointee in the Cabinet Office.
In response, State Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, praised Governor Yusuf for ordering an inquiry into the drug supply contracts and emphasized that the contracts for the interchange roads followed due process, with records available for public scrutiny. Dantiye questioned the APC’s frequent court requests to halt investigations into their affairs, urging them to allow the probes to continue if they have nothing to hide.
Dantiye also mentioned public demands for an investigation into the alleged misuse of local government funds by the former First Lady, who is accused of misusing funds through 44 bank accounts during her tenure. He assured Kano citizens that Governor Yusuf’s administration remains committed to accountability and will enforce penalties for any procurement process violations in line with legal standards.
