Senate President Godswill Akpabio reassured the public on Thursday that the Senate would approve the purchase of a presidential jet for President Bola Tinubu if necessary, emphasizing the legislature’s commitment to initiatives that benefit Nigerians.
Akpabio clarified during a plenary session that despite speculation and social media reports, there is currently no formal request before the Senate for the approval of a presidential jet purchase. He labeled such reports as preemptive attempts at manipulation.
“We prioritize the welfare of the President and the Nigerian people. We approve projects that enhance living standards and ensure the President’s ability to fulfill his duties,” Akpabio stated, addressing concerns over his remarks on the potential procurement of a presidential aircraft for Tinubu.
The Senate President underscored the importance of ensuring the President’s safety, citing recent incidents globally where faulty aircraft led to tragic outcomes for world leaders. He dismissed attempts to pre-emptively influence the Senate’s decision-making process, affirming the Senate’s responsibility to thoroughly scrutinize any future request.
“While there is no current proposal before us, if such a request arises in the future and it is deemed necessary, the Senate will deliberate on it accordingly,” Akpabio assured.
He concluded by urging the public to disregard speculative reports and reiterated the Senate’s commitment to responsible governance and the welfare of the nation.
