Supporters of Peter Obi from Nigeria’s North-Central region have cautioned the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate against entering into a proposed joint ticket with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, warning that such a move could compromise Obi’s credibility and the values he represents.
Under the banner North-Central Region of Nigeria Supporters for Mr. Peter Obi, the group issued a strongly worded statement expressing their opposition to any political alignment between Obi and Atiku. They cited ethical concerns and a history of allegations surrounding Atiku as incompatible with Obi’s reputation for transparency and reform.
“Mr. Obi, your steadfast commitment to transparency, accountability, and the upliftment of the Nigerian populace stands in contrast to the controversies associated with Mr. Abubakar,” the statement read.
Signed by Chairman Bitrus Samuel and Secretary Murtala Ndagi, the statement highlighted past allegations against Atiku, including Senate reports recommending prosecution and unresolved questions around alleged financial improprieties abroad.
The group emphasized that such an alliance could damage Obi’s support base in the North-Central region, where political trust has been eroded over the years.
“Many of us have placed our faith in you as a leader who embodies integrity and accountability. Accepting a vice-presidential role under Atiku’s banner could create disillusionment among your supporters.”
They also warned that the political baggage associated with Atiku could undermine the broader movement for a new Nigeria and further complicate the nation’s struggle with insecurity and weak governance.
“In a nation grappling with insecurity, the perception of a leader with a controversial past could have significant implications for our collective stability.”
While the group acknowledged the potential strategic gains such a partnership might offer, they urged Obi to prioritize principle over politics.
“The path to true leadership often requires difficult choices. We hope Mr. Obi will choose a path that aligns with the values we hold dear.”
Reaffirming their commitment to Obi’s candidacy, they closed the statement by declaring their continued support for his vision of ethical governance and national renewal.
“We stand united in our quest for a better Nigeria.”
