Senior Pastor of Daystar Christian Centre, Pastor Sam Adeyemi, has attributed the frequent defection of opposition politicians to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to fear of losing political relevance and power.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Pastor Adeyemi expressed concern over the apparent disconnect between many Nigerian leaders and the everyday struggles of the citizens, particularly the poor.
He criticized the prevailing political culture, saying many politicians are more concerned about self-preservation than national development.
“Some of our leaders, it is even obvious from the way they speak, that they have lost touch with the reality of the poor, they have no empathy, no compassion.
So, we want to create an environment that will make it possible for those in leadership to lead us in the right directions to make the right decisions.”
Pastor Adeyemi noted that the intense pressure to remain in office often drives politicians to compromise their principles, leading to defections purely motivated by fear of political extinction.
“Some of them are being threatened that they would lose their next election, that is what they are defecting. So their own survival is being threatened.”
His comments come amid growing public frustration over political instability and a seeming lack of commitment to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
