OwelekeTV (News) — Tension erupted at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the legislative complex, sealing off the chambers and the office of Speaker Mojisola Meranda.
Despite the heavy security presence, Meranda managed to preside over plenary, while lawmakers and assembly workers forced their way into the chamber around 12:30 p.m., chanting solidarity songs. The situation quickly escalated when DSS operatives, dressed in black jackets and helmets and armed with weapons, clashed with legislative workers at the chamber’s exit door, leading to a near-violent confrontation.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with shouting matches and scuffles breaking out between DSS officials and assembly staff who resisted the security operatives’ interference. The pandemonium inside the chamber underscored the deepening crisis at the assembly, fueled by a leadership tussle between ousted Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and Meranda.
Outside the assembly complex, no fewer than 10 police vans were stationed at the entrance, further intensifying the standoff. Security operatives had taken over the premises earlier in the day, delaying the plenary session as uncertainty loomed over the fate of the legislative leadership.
The dramatic turn of events follows weeks of political tension within the assembly, with power struggles threatening to destabilize legislative activities in the state. With plenary now underway amid the turmoil, all eyes remain on the unfolding crisis as lawmakers battle for control of the house.
