‘Best in Africa!’ Cybercrime Unit Recovered N8bn, $115k in 2024 — Report

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has ramped up its fight against cybercrime, recording significant achievements in 2024. Through the dedicated efforts of its cybercrime unit, the force not only disrupted major criminal networks but also restituted over N8 billion and $115,000 to victims of fraudulent activities.

Breaking Down the Gains
A detailed report highlights the recovery of 685 devices used in cybercrimes, including 467 mobile phones, 137 laptops, 46 routers, and even a drone. The unit also seized 16 houses, 39 plots of land, 14 land documents, and 26 vehicles tied to cybercriminal operations. These efforts aim to dismantle the infrastructure sustaining illegal activities in the digital space.

High-Impact Arrests
The cybercrime unit apprehended 751 suspects linked to cyber fraud, with the most recent arrests including Douglass Victor, Egbo Martins, Lucky Adesunloye, and Ndifreke Joseph Moody. These arrests mark another step in safeguarding Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Global Recognition
The unit’s exceptional work earned it international acclaim, with INTERPOL’s Cybercrime Directorate in Singapore naming it the Best Cybercrime Unit in Africa for 2024. Competing against counterparts from 54 African nations, the unit’s performance solidified Nigeria’s position as a leader in tackling digital crime.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson, emphasized the force’s commitment to justice.

“These operations reaffirm our dedication to protecting citizens and ensuring cybercriminals face the full weight of the law,” he said.
