Three Nigerian women detained in Saudi Arabia for alleged possession of cocaine have regained their freedom after ten months in custody.
Their release followed high-level diplomatic negotiations between the Nigerian government and Saudi authorities. The women, Hadiza Abba, Fatima Malah, and Fatima Gamboi, were arrested on March 5, 2024, at the Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Madinah.
A statement revealed that their detention was linked to the earlier arrest of two Nigerians found with cocaine. The trio had been suspected of being accomplices but was ultimately acquitted after prolonged legal and diplomatic interventions.
“Their successful release was achieved after prolonged diplomatic and legal engagements, which culminated in their discharge and acquittal, as well as subsequent handover to the Consulate-General of Nigeria in Jeddah,”
the statement noted.
The women were received by Nigeria’s Consulate in Jeddah and are now awaiting final immigration processes for their return home.
