The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored electricity to most parts of Bayelsa State, ending a four-month blackout caused by vandalism.
Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the General Manager of TCN’s Port Harcourt Region, Emmanuel Anyaegbulem, explained that the outage began on July 29, 2024, after criminals vandalized 20 transmission towers along the Ahoada-Yenagoa 132-kilovolt (KV) transmission line, which is the sole power supply route to Bayelsa State.
Anyaegbulem says,
“Repairing the towers was a significant challenge, but we successfully restored power on November 30, 2024,”
He added that constructing a single transmission tower costs approximately N13 million.
He also disclosed that police attached to TCN apprehended 10 suspects for vandalizing the company’s facilities in 2024. Four of the suspects have been convicted, while six remain in custody.
Anyaegbulem reaffirmed TCN’s commitment to supporting Distribution Companies (DisCos) in ensuring consistent power supply to consumers.
