Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has presented the state’s budget for the 2025 fiscal year, with a total appropriation of N605 billion. The announcement was made during his address to the State House of Assembly in Benin City on Tuesday.

Describing the budget as a 25% increase from 2024’s allocation, the governor emphasized its focus on infrastructure and education. Of the total budget, N162 billion has been earmarked for road development, reflecting the administration’s commitment to improving connectivity and fostering economic growth across the state.

“We are prioritizing the construction of motorable roads to link communities and enhance productivity,” Okpebholo said.

The governor also highlighted education as a key focus, noting that substantial investments would be made to strengthen the sector and improve access to quality learning opportunities.

Okpebholo expressed optimism that the proposed budget would address critical developmental needs and urged lawmakers to give it due consideration.

However, during his speech, the governor appeared to struggle briefly as he stuttered while mentioning the budget figure. Despite the momentary lapse, he regained his composure and proceeded with his address, calling on lawmakers to give the budget their due consideration and approval.

“The proposed budget is six billion… no, 605 billion… um, 76 million… let me try again. It’s 506 billion… no, 605 billion… sorry, it’s confusing,” the governor stammered, eliciting laughter and murmurs from the legislators.

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku eventually intervened, calling for order and allowing Okpebholo to regain composure. The governor finally clarified that the budget stood at N605 billion, expressing gratitude for the lawmakers’ patience.

Highlighting the administration’s focus, Okpebholo revealed that road infrastructure and education remain top priorities. He announced an allocation of N162 billion for road development, emphasizing the need to enhance connectivity across communities for economic growth.
