Goodluck Jonathan Urges Peace and Neutrality Ahead of Edo Governorship Election

Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has called on all stakeholders, including the candidates in the upcoming Edo State governorship election, to prioritize peace and security.

In a statement issued on Thursday through his media adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan urged politicians to act within the law and avoid actions that could destabilize the state.

He also appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Police Force, and other security agencies to remain neutral, ensuring that citizens can freely exercise their democratic rights in a fair and transparent election.

Jonathan emphasized the need for a level playing field, stating that democracy loses its value when citizens are unable to vote freely.

His statement read:

“As citizens of voting age in Edo State prepare for the governorship election on Saturday, September 21, 2024, I urge all political actors and stakeholders to focus on the peace and security of the state.”

He continued, “Politicians must operate within the law and avoid actions that may disrupt the peace and stability of Edo State.”

He called on INEC and security agencies to remain professional and neutral, ensuring that the election process is fair and transparent, while warning that any loss of confidence in the electoral process could lead to social unrest, political disputes, and voter apathy.

“For democracy to thrive, state institutions must guarantee peaceful, credible, and transparent elections, allowing citizens to choose leaders who can deliver good governance, peace, and prosperity,” Jonathan concluded.
