Peter Obi Expresses Dismay Over Nigeria’s Deteriorating Roads

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has voiced his deep concern over the worsening condition of Nigeria’s road infrastructure.

Describing it as a reflection of the country’s decline, Obi expressed disappointment with both the leadership and the general public’s seeming indifference to the issue.

Recounting a recent road trip, Obi shared how the journey from Ekpoma to Benin in Edo State, once a two-hour drive, was significantly prolonged due to the poor state of the roads.

Posting on his X handle, Obi detailed his experience:
“On Saturday, I traveled for six and a half hours from Onitsha to Igarra, Akoko-Edo, to join our Labour Party governorship candidate for Edo State, Barrister Olumide Akpata. We continued our campaign through Jattu-Uzairue and Auchi.”

He went on to describe the difficulties:
“Upon leaving Auchi around 6 PM, the bad roads extended our journey to Ekpoma, taking nearly an hour and a half. From Ekpoma, it took another 3 hours to drive to Benin—a trip that once took only 2 hours.”

Obi also expressed sadness over the multiple accidents he witnessed during the trip, stating:
“We encountered over a dozen accidents along the way. My heart kept bleeding, wondering how we have allowed ourselves to descend to this level where our leaders no longer care.”

His statement underscores the urgent need for improved road infrastructure and leadership accountability in Nigeria.
