The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has announced a reduction in the cost of nomination forms for the upcoming local government elections.
Speaking to journalists on Friday in Kano, KANSIEC Chairman, Sani Malumfashi, confirmed that the fees for chairmanship and councillorship positions have been reduced from ₦10 million and ₦5 million to ₦9 million and ₦4 million, respectively.
The initial high fees sparked reactions, with former Digital Media Adviser to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmed, stating that All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates could not afford the price. Opposition parties also took legal action, leading to a court order restraining KANSIEC from enforcing the initial fees.
Malumfashi emphasized that the commission is committed to conducting a peaceful and transparent election, with nomination forms now available at commercial banks across the state.
“We have complied with the court order, and candidates should hurry to the banks to obtain their forms,” Malumfashi stated, assuring that the electoral process would be fair for all parties involved.
