Former U.S. President and Republican nominee, Donald Trump, has announced that he will not participate in any further debates with Democratic candidate, Vice President Kamala Harris, ahead of the November 5 election.
Speculations arose following the ABC News presidential debate on Tuesday, where some suggested Trump underperformed against Harris. However, Trump disputed this, claiming he won the debate.
While Harris’s campaign expressed interest in holding another debate in October, Trump firmly stated on Thursday that he would not engage in any more debates with her. He likened her request for another debate to a “defeated boxer” asking for a rematch.
“When a prizefighter loses a fight, they ask for a rematch,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Polls clearly show I won the debate against Comrade Kamala Harris.”
Despite Trump’s statement, Harris continued to advocate for another debate, stating, “We owe it to the voters.”
According to an aggregation of three national polls by 538, 57% of respondents believed Harris outperformed Trump, compared to 34% for Trump. This polling data included surveys sponsored by Republicans.
Following the debate, Trump and his conservative allies criticized ABC News moderators for alleged bias in favor of Harris, accusing them of unfair fact-checking during the post-debate analysis.
Meanwhile, a debate between U.S. Senator J.D. Vance and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, representing the vice-presidential candidates, is scheduled for October 1.
