Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has confirmed the receipt of a ₦3 billion flood intervention fund from the Federal Government to address the widespread devastation caused by recent flooding in Maiduguri, which has displaced over one million people.
During a visit to the Bakassi IDP camp along the Biu-Damboa road in Maiduguri on Wednesday, Zulum shared details of the state’s response efforts.
The governor announced that food and essential supplies would be distributed, with local vendors engaged to provide meals for those taking refuge in the camp.
To address health risks, a committee will be set up to monitor potential disease outbreaks and minimize their impact. Additionally, search and rescue operations have commenced in affected areas, and data collection on those impacted is underway.
Governor Zulum attributed the flooding to heavy rainfall, urban development blocking water channels, and the overflow of the Alo Dam, worsened by water releases from dams in Cameroon.
In response, the state plans to reconstruct the Alo Dam to boost its capacity and demolish structures in flood-prone areas to prevent future disasters.
