The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has responded to accusations made by the party’s embattled national chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, who alleged that Obi and Abia State Governor Alex Otti conspired against him.
During a recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, Abure accused the two of orchestrating a stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, where former Finance Minister Esther Nenadi Usman was appointed as chairperson of a 29-member caretaker committee to address the party’s leadership crisis.
Obi, through his spokesperson, Comrade Ibrahim Umar of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), expressed disappointment over the accusations, labeling them politically motivated and aimed at misleading the public.
“I am disappointed, but not surprised by the false accusations of betrayal made against Mr. Peter Obi by Julius Abure. This is clearly a politically motivated attempt to mislead the public,” Umar stated.
He clarified that the stakeholders meeting was meant to resolve internal disputes and not a personal attack. The Obidient Movement, he added, stands in solidarity with the decisions made at the meeting, emphasizing unity, justice, and transparency.
Umar criticized Abure for defaming Obi and questioned his resistance to leaving office despite his tenure ending in June. He urged Abure to prioritize the party’s interest over personal ambitions.
“We will not engage in name-calling or character assassination. We urge Julius Abure to accept the intervention aimed at resolving misunderstandings and move the party forward,” Umar concluded.
