The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning that it is prepared to launch a nationwide strike if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is arrested or detained by the Nigeria Police.
This announcement followed an emergency meeting of the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) at the union’s headquarters on Tuesday morning. The meeting was convened in response to a police request to invite the NLC President concerning allegations related to the financing of terrorism.
During the meeting, the NEC resolved that Ajaero would comply with the police’s invitation. However, they stressed the importance of the union’s legal counsel requesting additional time to prepare for Ajaero’s appearance before law enforcement authorities.
Deputy President of the NLC, Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, urged the nation’s workforce to remain vigilant and ready for further instructions, depending on how the situation with Ajaero unfolds.
He stated, “As a committed labour centre, we will honour the invitation of the police because we are not a faceless organization, but we are working with our lawyer for an extension of time.
“In the event that the President is arrested, all workers will down tools immediately. We should wait for further directives from our leadership.”
