In a show of solidarity amidst economic challenges, members of the House of Representatives have unanimously agreed to reduce their salaries by 50% over a six-month period.
This decision followed the adoption of an amendment to a motion by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu, advocating for lawmakers to sacrifice half of their monthly N600,000 salaries.
Kalu emphasized that the salary cut aims to bolster the federal government’s efforts in alleviating the increasing cost of food items, thereby easing the hardship faced by Nigerians.
The amendment was incorporated into a motion originally put forth by Rep Isiaka Ayokunle, urging proponents of planned nationwide protests to opt for dialogue with the government instead.
The motion has been adopted and forwarded to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for implementation.
