In a recent development, the Rivers State High Court has issued an order preventing the State House of Assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule, from impeaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The ruling, delivered by Justice D. Jumbo Stephens in response to an ex-parte order on suit No PHC/2177/CS/2024, was filed by the Attorney-General of Rivers State and Governor Fubara.
The court injunction directs the Chief Judge of Rivers State and the Clerk of the State House of Assembly to refrain from any dealings with the lawmakers under Amaewhule’s leadership. It maintains the status quo pending the resolution of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction.
Justice Stephens specified that the 31st and 32nd defendants are restrained from receiving or acting on any impeachment resolutions or documents from the lawmakers listed as defendants in the suit.
Additionally, the court ordered the originating and other legal documents to be served through substituted means at the entrance of the Rivers State House of Assembly quarters.
The case is scheduled for further proceedings on July 15th, focusing on the motion for interlocutory injunction.
