More than 280,000 Canadians have signed a petition calling for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to revoke US tech mogul Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship, accusing him of actions against the country’s national interests.
Launched on February 20, the parliamentary petition claims that Musk, the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under former US President Donald Trump, is “becoming a member of a foreign government attempting to erase Canadian sovereignty.”
The petition further alleges that Musk has engaged in activities “against the national interest of Canada” and used his vast wealth and influence to impact Canadian elections.
Musk, the world’s richest man, holds passports from South Africa, the US, and Canada, the latter of which he acquired through his Canadian-born mother. Known for his leadership at Tesla, SpaceX, and as the owner of X, Musk has recently been involved in US political affairs, notably becoming one of Trump’s closest allies.
The billionaire has stood by Trump, who has shaken up US-Canada relations by threatening to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods, potentially nullifying the longstanding free trade agreement between the US, Canada, and Mexico. Though the tariffs were temporarily delayed in February for negotiations, Trump has announced he will proceed with the measures next week.
Musk and Trump have also suggested that Canada should join the US as its “51st state,” with Musk controversially referring to Prime Minister Trudeau as “Canada’s governor.” In response to the petition, Musk dismissed Canada’s sovereignty, claiming on X that “Canada is not a real country.”
