Emerging reports suggest that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and several other key opposition leaders have reached an agreement to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform for their united front in the 2027 general elections.
The development reportedly followed a strategic meeting held on Tuesday night, May 20, in Abuja, during which the coalition leaders reached a consensus to move forward under the ADC banner.
While the decision appears to have gained traction among opposition stakeholders, the ADC leadership has indicated that it is still awaiting a formal update from its internal coalition committee regarding the status of the talks.
Speaking with the Daily Sun, ADC National Chairman Okey Nwosu confirmed the party’s ongoing engagement with top political figures and groups, noting the ADC’s longstanding identity as a coalition-friendly platform.
“ADC has always been a coalition party. It came to the fore when President Olusegun Obasanjo told all the civil society organizations that were working with him for a new Nigeria that ADC is the transformational party. That was in 2018. If this year, some patriots are also talking with the ADC, it is in the character of the party. The character of the party is working with deeply patriotic Nigerians to save the country,” Nwosu said.
He added that discussions are underway with various opposition leaders, political parties, and civil society groups, with a clear goal of creating a united platform to “take their country back.”
“So, we are having conversations with almost all the opposition leaders. We are having conversations with all the political parties. By the Grace of God, in a matter of days, we should know our fate. The same thing we are doing, other political parties are also doing. But we would like to form a coalition of opposition leaders, political parties, and civil society, so that the citizens can come up with ways to take their country back.”
Nwosu noted that although he is not directly part of the coalition team, the party has designated two committees — one led by Dr. Bamidele Ajadi and the other by Dr. Mani Ibrahim Ahmad — to handle coalition discussions. He confirmed the teams are expected to submit a report on the progress of the talks shortly.
