The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, revealed that the institution recently took action against two academic staff members who were dismissed due to allegations related to sexual misconduct. Additionally, the university has established a dedicated communication channel for students to report cases of sexual harassment and other unethical behavior by lecturers.
Prof. Na’Allah emphasized that the university collaborated with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) that focuses on handling sexual harassment cases. Recently, a significant conference was held on campus, during which students bravely came forward to expose some of the troubling incidents that had occurred within the university.
Furthermore, Prof. Na’Allah informed that every student at the University of Abuja now has access to a student portal, enabling them to report or comment on their lecturers’ behavior. Through this portal, students can provide feedback on various aspects of their lecturers’ performance, such as class attendance and teaching quality, not limited to concerns about sexual harassment.
He also revealed that the university’s council recently approved a measure that allows students to assess their lecturers, likely as a means to promote transparency and accountability within the academic community.
