Organized labour has criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s position on the abolition of fuel subsidies, claiming it will have serious consequences for the country’s political system.
The age of fuel subsidies is over, Mr. Tinubu told Nigerians in his inaugural speech yesterday in Abuja.
In response to the development, Comrade Benson Upah, chairman of the NLC’s information division, claimed that organized labour was unaware that the president had consulted with important stakeholders before making the decision.
The labor center is eagerly awaiting the time when the policy will be translated into figures before responding, according to Benson, who described the action as having serious ramifications for the country’s policy.
He said,
“Our response, and indeed, the response of Nigerians, is contingent on when this policy statement translates into figures.
“I am not aware the new president held consultations with the critical stakeholders like organized labour before making this policy statement with grave implications for the polity; we are waiting, Nigerians are waiting,” he said.
