Abbba Yusuf, the new governor of Kano State, who assumed office on Monday along with other governors of other states, expressed his shock at what he called Abdullahi Ganduje’s “huge debt profile.”
In his inaugural address, Yusuf pledged that as soon as he got down to business, he would look into the conditions that gave rise to the enormous debt liability.
While former governor Ganduje was not there for the handover, Alhaji Usman Alhaji spoke in his place. Alhaji Usman Alhaji said that the Ganduje administration collected N1.2 trillion in loans over the course of the last eight years, leaving a total of around N241 billion in debt, which included loans and other contractual obligations.
In his words:
“I am surprised that the outgoing governor is not around to hand over to me as a democratically elected governor, which has been the tradition.
“However, we will carefully study the reports and come out with our positions.”
