The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, stating that the exercise will now take place after the 2027 General Elections.

The decision was reached during a meeting between the commission and all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026.

The announcement was contained in a press statement issued by the commission on Friday.

According to INEC, the postponement followed extensive deliberations by the commission and its senior officials.

INEC disclosed that the decision was made after careful discussions during the meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners from across the country.

The commission explained that the exercise, which is aimed at updating the National Register of Voters, would now be conducted at a later date after the next general election cycle.

The announcement was contained in a press statement issued by the commission on Friday.

In the statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the commission emphasised the importance of the voter revalidation exercise.

INEC described the exercise as a key aspect of its constitutional responsibility to maintain a credible and updated voter register.

“The voter revalidation exercise remains a critical component of the commission’s mandate to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters,” the statement noted.
