The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, has established an Ad hoc Committee to conduct an investigation into the alleged loss of $9.05 billion in revenue from gas flaring over the past decade in Nigeria. The committee’s primary objective is to delve into the root causes of gas flaring and suggest solutions to address this problem. The urgency of the probe is rooted in the recognition of the detrimental environmental, social, and economic impacts of this practice.
Rep. Abbas emphasized the critical nature of the committee’s task, as gas flaring and venting have long been a significant concern in Nigeria, impacting the environment, economy, health, and social aspects of the country. The wasted gas represents substantial lost revenue that could have been utilized for various purposes, such as electricity generation or industrial processes.
In response to this prolonged issue, the ad hoc committee has called for a fair hearing, urging stakeholders to present their submissions transparently. The investigation targets oil companies and various government agencies involved in gas flaring. The committee aims to identify loopholes, amend laws if necessary, and enhance revenue generation to support infrastructure, security, education, and health initiatives.
Notably, the committee has invited several companies and regulatory bodies to appear before it, including Total/Mobil V Domestic wing, Total/Oando JV, African Petroleum Pic., and others. The investigation is driven by recent data from the Nigerian Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), which reported that Nigeria lost a substantial sum of N891 billion to gas flaring in 18 months.
NOSDRA’s report highlighted the magnitude of gas flaring, which led to significant financial losses for Nigeria. In the first half of 2022 alone, companies flared 126 billion standard cubic feet of gas, resulting in a loss of about N183.54 billion. Moreover, the report also revealed oil spill incidents that further exacerbated environmental concerns.
The Ad hoc Committee’s mandate is crucial to tackle the complex issue of gas flaring and its far-reaching consequences on Nigeria’s economy, environment, and people. By addressing the root causes and engaging relevant stakeholders, the committee seeks to find sustainable solutions to end this detrimental practice and promote a greener, more economically viable future for the country.
