According to legal sources, a former Mexican mayor was given a 92-year prison term for kidnapping six civil society activists in 2013.
Jose Luis Abarca, 62, was also penalized 920,700 pesos for the kidnappings in the Guerrero state’s Iguala city.
Among the casualties was Arturo Hernandez Cardona, a prominent figure in agriculture who was later discovered dead.
The disappearance of 43 students in 2014, while Abarca was the mayor of Iguala, is considered one of Mexico’s worst violations of human rights.
He was detained in a jail in central Mexico that year after being arrested.
